Essential Life Support

This 2.5 hour course is suitable for all healthcare professionals from Healthcare Assistants to GP's and Consultants and meets all requirements for professional registration renewal. This course includes: Chain of Survival, CPR for adults, children and infants, choking for adults, children and infants, safe use of AEDS's and pad placement, anaphylaxis recognition and initial treatment, DNACPR, ReSPECT and the recovery position.

CPR and Defibrillator for Secondary Schools

This course meets the Department for Educations 2020 requirement for secondary school children to receive CPR children on an annual basis. This course can be delivered to groups of children or an option to deliver "Train the Trainer" course is also available, enabling teachers to reach the standard required to deliver CPR training to secondary school children.

Community Public Access Defibrillator training and CPR

This course can be tailored to your villages needs and requirements to familiarise local residents with Community Public Access Defibrillators (CPAD) and how to use them. This course is also ideal for defibrillators which have been sited at Golf Clubs, Community Halls, and other public or private premises.

Immediate Life Support (ILS)

Who is this course suitable for?
The ILS course is suitable for doctors, medical students, nurses, nursing students, midwives, healthcare providers such as physiotherapists, dentist and ambulance technicians. It may also be suitable for fire service technicians, police personnel and prison officers.

Learning outcomes
The ILS course teaches the knowledge and skills to:

  • identify the causes and promote the prevention of cardiopulmonary arrest; 
  • recognise and treat the deteriorating patient using the ABCDE approach;
  • undertake the skills of quality CPR and defibrillation (manual and /or AED) and simple airway manoeuvres;
  • utilise non-technical skills to facilitate initial leadership and effective team membership

Paediatric Immediate Life Support (PILS)

Who is this course suitable for?
The PILS Course is appropriate for the following candidates: doctors, medical students (final year), nurses, health visitors, school nurses,  nursing students (final year), midwives, ODPs , cardiac technicians, resuscitation officers, physiotherapists, dentists, dental nurses, ambulance technicians/paramedics.

The PILS course addresses the needs of staff who need more advanced skills than those taught during basic life support (BLS), but who do not require the more comprehensive two-day European Paediatric Advanced Life Support (EPALS) course.

Learning outcomes

  • The PILS course teaches the knowledge and skills to:
    understand the structured ABCDE approach that facilitates rapid recognition of seriously ill children;
  • provide appropriate initial treatment interventions to prevent cardiorespiratory arrest;
  • treat children in respiratory or cardiorespiratory arrest until the arrival of a resuscitation team or more experienced assistance;
  • promote active  membership of a paediatric resuscitation team.

1 Day Emergency First Aid at Work including Paediatrics

In accordance with Appendix 6 H&S (First-Aid) Regulations 1981;

  • The role of the first aider
  • Importance of preventing cross infection
  • The need for recording incidents and actions
  • Use of available equipment
  • Assessing the situation & act safely in an emergency
  • Administer Cardio Pulmonary Resuscitation
  • Safe use of an Automated External Defibrillator
  • Administer first aid to a casualty who is:
    • unconscious (including seizures)
    • choking
    • wounded or bleeding
    • suffering from shock
  • Provide appropriate first aid for Minor Injuries (small cuts, grazes, bruises, minor burns, scalds & small splinters)

Additional Subjects

  • Administer Cardio Pulmonary Resuscitation to a child
  • Recognition and management of Asthma
  • Recognition and management of Anaphylaxis
  • Administer first aid to a child who is:
    • unconscious (including seizures)
    • choking

3 day First Aid at Work including Paediatrics

In accordance with Appendix 5 & 6of the H&S (First-Aid) Regulations 1981:

roles and responsibilities of a first aider;

  • cross-infection;
  • recording incidents & actions;
  • use of available equipment;
  • assessing an incident;
  • unconscious casualties (including seizure);
  • cardiopulmonary resuscitation;
  • Safe use of an Automated External Defibrillator;
  • choking;
  • wounds and bleeding;
  • shock;
  • minor injuries (including small cuts, grazes and bruises, minor burns and scalds, small splinters);secondary survey;
  • injuries to bones, joints and muscles (including spinal injuries);
  • suspected head and spinal injuries;
  • chest injuries;
  • burns and scalds;
  • eye injuries;
  • sudden poisoning;
  • anaphylaxis;
  • major illnesses (heart attack, stroke, epilepsy, asthma & diabetes);
  • serious bleeding including:
    • embedded objects;
    • sucking chest wound;
    • amputations;

Additional Subjects relating to a School environment

  • Administer Cardio Pulmonary Resuscitation to a child
  • Recognition and management of Asthma
  • Recognition and management of Anaphylaxis
  • Administer first aid to a child who is:
    • unconscious (including seizures)

Level 3 Anaphylaxis Training

This course comprises of both theoretical and practical elements. The learning outcomes are as follows:

• Describe anaphylaxis

• Identify triggers for anaphylaxis

Describe life threatening problems associated with the:

• Airway

• Breathing

• Circulation

• Disability (Neurological status)

• Exposure (Skin and mucosal changes)

• Explain the need for an early call for help

• Explain the treatment for anaphylaxis:

• Non re-breather mask

• Removal of trigger

• Auto-injector

• Identify key features of adrenaline-auto injectors

• Conduct an initial assessment using the ABCDE approach

• Demonstrate a recovery position

• Demonstrate resuscitation for adult and/or child

• Recognise the need to use an auto-injector

• Prepare medication for administration during anaphylaxis treatment

• Demonstrate the safe use of an adrenaline auto-injector using a training device

• Safely dispose of sharps according to agreed ways of working

• Handover the casualty to a medical professional

Level 3 Oxygen Administration Training

This course will enable learners to:

  • Explain benefits of oxygen therapy
  • Identify indications for the use of oxygen
  • Explain contraindications prohibiting use of oxygen
  • Explain dangers of using compressed gas

Outline health and safety rules for the:

  • Use
  • Storage
  • Handling of oxygen
  • Carry out operational checks in preparation for use of oxygen therapy equipment
  • Identify when oxygen therapy is required

Administer oxygen using the required flow rate for the following oxygen delivery devices:

  • Non re-breather mask
  • Bag, valve and mask
  • Administer oxygen to a patient in line with agreed ways of working

Level 2 Basic Life Support and Automated External Defibrillator Training

Over a half day period, learners will develop the knowledge and practical competences needed to deal with a range of first aid situations and safely use an Automated External Defibrillator (AED). Topics covered include: managing an unresponsive casualty, CPR, using an AED on both adults and children, combining AED use with CPR and more.
